I am working on a series of articles about Foods for Special Occasions. In Flanders, for instance, sugar-coated chocolate or almonds announce birth, cheese and butter sandwiches (pistolets) accompany a funeral. A Bengali ceremony is the mukhebhat, when rice is given as the baby's first solid meal...
