Hi Katrien, Yes, this is something I experience a lot - as an Australian in Europe, I am very often asked "why on earth do you live here when you could live in Australia?" I always try to explain that Europe has fascinating culture, different languages, bla bla bla, which Australia doesn't have (plus 4 real seasons!) - but nobody ever really understands. Funny, isn't it.

Hi Amanda,

As a European in the States I get the same thing, from Americans: what are you doing over here, with a baby and all, when in Belgium there is universal health care, dental care, paid parental leave, state-sponsored child-care, and child support. Etc. (So it's not, I should point out, that they want me out of here.)

It is always easy to list what one is missing. It is better to realize that your ideal place is the one you make ideal. There will always be room for improvement, sure. Thank goodness!
