» Feature Writer Jacqueline Church - Going home when home is no more

Several years ago, I returned to Japan with my mother. I asked our cousin to drive us by where I was born. Imagine, it no longer exists. Literally. The air force base was decomissioned and the only building that looked remotely familiar to my mother (who had left Japan after college only to meet and marry a man destined to be stationed in Tokyo) was currently serving as some administrative or living quarters --unclear.

I wasn't the least bit sad, I hadn't any memory of that place of origin. But it confirmed in a deep way for me the certainty of my having a very different sense of belonging.

Anyway...

ask me someday about the ex-pat bar in Beijing...

Cheers,
Jacqueline
