I just received an email from a fellow Belgian (from Flanders) telling me that the "ijslam" or ice lamb already existed at his Communion, 35 years ago!I wonder when and where it originated? Probably some enterprising baker or pattisier thought it up. Does anyone know?
Belgians, please let me know if you too know of the "ijslam" in your own region (my personal experience is from Ghent). As a matter of curiosity it would be interesting to delineate the "ijslam"s reign geographically...
Happy Eating,

Thank you for another very interesting article ![]()
I am R.C. here in the U.S.A.. Some Catholics here make a "big day" of the First Communion (First Eucharist) for young family members, but in my personal experience I know of no family that spends that amount of money on a celebration! It is more, as you indicated from your own youth, a family day and celebration.
I have never before heard of the ice lamb. What is the "red liquid" that oozes out? A fruit syrup? What kind of cake usually is underneath the lamb? You mentioned sweet and calorie-dense food...
Thanks,

In response to "ijslam" 35 years ago posted by Cercis:Hi Cercis,
thank you for your readership and your input!
The red liquid is grenadine syrup, a blood-red syrup made from pomegranates (I have added it in the article). You buy grenadine in bottles. A fancier version of the lamb has a red "coulis" or fresh fruit syrup, mostly made of red berries, inside. And the cake underneath the lamb is an ice cream cake.
Sounds good, no?

I am trying to find a "ijslam" for my daughter's first communion as I had one when I did my communion in Kortrijk in 1974. I live in New Jersey close to NYC. Does anyone know if there is somewhere I could get one? Thyank you for your help.

Hi Sarah,
I picture-googled "ijslam" and found a couple of pictures put up by Belgian patisseries. I took them to the local cakery and they said they could make one of these for me without a problem. Hopefully a shop nearby you can do the same!
Let us know what happened and congratulations on your daughter's first communion.

When I first read your article I thought "Wow! Ijslammekes have been around THAT long??" And then I made the horrible realisation that MY OWN ijslam had its head lobbed off 33 years ago!!! Problem is, I don't remember where those intervening 33 years went!!! Well not all of them anyway!
I shall indeed keep you informed as to my progress in finding an ijslam here in New Jersey. Thank you for your help & I hope we can stay in contact.
If anyone else has any bright ideas as to where I might find an ijslam in Northern New Jersey/New York I would be grateful for the information.
Regards,
Sarah Snow
